PROGRAM & POSITION DESCRIPTION

EarthScope & Program Overview

EarthScope Consortium, operator of the NSF National Geophysical Facility, is a global community of employees, scientists, scholars, and educators. Our goal is to advance understanding of the Earth and its physical systems by democratizing access to geophysical instrumentation, observations, and practices.

The EarthScope Student Career Internship Program offers real-world work experiences for undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates (within 1 year of graduating at time of application) related to the interns’ academic and career goals. Each intern is an integral member of the team and plays an important role by contributing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to specific projects.

Position Overview

  • Time Commitment:  Full-time
  • Internship Dates:   Late May to early August 2026, exact dates TBD
  • Modality:   Remote
  • Compensation:   Weekly stipend of $1,000/week for 11 weeks

Position Summary

The Cloud OnRamp Intern will support EarthScope’s Cloud Research OnRamp initiative by contributing to the development and curation of cloud-based Jupyter Notebook resources used in geophysical research and training. The intern will work with the GeoLab JupyterHub platform to organize domain-specific example notebooks, improve documentation, and support short courses that introduce researchers to cloud-native workflows. This role offers hands-on experience at the intersection of geoscience, data science, and scientific user experience design.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will:

  • Curate and organize a GitHub-based collection of domain-specific demonstration Jupyter Notebooks for geophysical research.
  • Assist in drafting and refining contribution guidelines to support community sharing and collaborative maintenance of notebooks.
  • Gather and summarize example use cases for Jupyter Notebooks across geophysical disciplines.
  • Support EarthScope technical short courses by organizing, testing, and improving instructional notebooks used in GeoLab.
  • Contribute to short-course documentation, including course setup, account access, and pre-course preparation materials.
  • Explore and develop tools and/or approaches that enhance the user experience within EarthScope’s JupyterHub environment.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and communicate progress via Slack and Zoom. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications 

  • Current upper-level undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate (within 1 year) in geosciences.
  • Experience creating, editing, and running Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Experience using GitHub or other version control systems.
  • Authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.

Preferred Experience 

  • Familiarity with cloud computing or high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Experience documenting code, workflows, or technical processes for others.

Required Skills & Attributes

  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a remote team environment.
  • Interest in scientific user experience design and usability.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assigned tasks.

 

PHYSICAL & MENTAL WORK DEMANDS

Physical Work Demands:

  • Able to sit and/or stand to work at a computer.

Mental & Schedule Demands:

  • Regular and on-time attendance to Zoom meetings and set work schedule.
  • Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
  • Comfort working with a remote, distributed team across time zones.
