EarthScope & Program Overview
EarthScope Consortium, operator of the NSF National Geophysical Facility, is a global community of employees, scientists, scholars, and educators. The EarthScope Student Career Internship Program offers real-world work experiences for undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates (within 1 year of graduating at time of application) related to the interns’ academic and career goals. Each intern is an integral member of the team and plays an important role by contributing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to specific projects.

Position Overview
- Time Commitment: Full-time
- Internship Dates: Late May to early August 2026, exact dates TBD
- Modality: Remote
- Compensation: Weekly stipend of $1,000/week for 11 weeks
Position Summary
The Seismology Skill Building Workshop (SSBW) Intern will support the modernization of EarthScope’s flagship seismology training program. Working with EarthScope staff and SSBW instructors, the intern will help migrate course materials into EarthScope’s Moodle learning platform and GeoLab JupyterHub computing environment. The role focuses on instructional design, aligning training with scientific infrastructure, curriculum organization, and assessment and evaluation. This position offers hands-on experience at the intersection of geophysics, scientific computing, and instructional design.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will:
- Support the migration and organization of SSBW course materials into EarthScope’s Moodle learning management system and GeoLab JupyterHub.
- Assist instructors and staff with reviewing, testing, and refining instructional notebooks and workflows.
- Help document technical and instructional processes to support future course delivery and maintenance.
- Assist with the development, administration, and analysis of course evaluation instruments.
- Identify opportunities to improve course structure, sequencing, and alignment with learning objectives.
- Participate in regular project meetings and communicate progress via Slack and Zoom.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications
- Current upper-level undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate (within 1 year) in Earth sciences or a related STEM field.
- Experience using scientific computing tools such as Linux, Python (including ObsPy), and Jupyter Notebooks.
- Authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with seismic or geophysical data.
- Experience contributing to curriculum development, instructional materials, or educational projects (formal or informal).
- Teaching or instructional experience (e.g., teaching assistant, tutor, workshop facilitator, or peer instructor), particularly in STEM or scientific computing contexts.
- Experience delivering educational content with Moodle or other learning management systems.
- Familiarity with Seismic Analysis Code (SAC).
- Experience with the Seismology Skill Building Workshop as a participant.
- Experience documenting technical or analytical workflows for others.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL WORK DEMANDS
Physical Work Demands:
- Able to sit and/or stand to work at a computer.
Mental & Schedule Demands:
- Regular and on-time attendance to Zoom meetings and set work schedule.
- Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
- Comfort working with a remote, distributed team across time zones.
