PROGRAM & POSITION DESCRIPTION
EarthScope & Program Overview
EarthScope Consortium, operator of the NSF National Geophysical Facility, is a global community of employees, scientists, scholars, and educators. Our goal is to advance understanding of the Earth and its physical systems by democratizing access to geophysical instrumentation, observations, and practices.

The EarthScope Student Career Internship Program offers real-world work experiences for undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates (within 1 year of graduating at time of application) related to the interns’ academic and career goals. Each intern is an integral member of the team and plays an important role by contributing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to specific projects.

Position Overview
- Time Commitment: Full-time
- Internship Dates: Late May to early August 2026, exact dates TBD
- Modality: Remote, with possibility of some travel for orientation and/or participation in the Teaching Near-surface Geophysics workshop in Golden, CO.
- Compensation: Weekly stipend of $1,000/week for 11 weeks
Position Summary
The intern will be responsible for educational resources development, technical support documentation, and data processing/presentation. Potential topics could include near-surface and other geophysics methods applied to addressing societal challenges such as natural hazards, environment monitoring, infrastructure assessment, and more.
Key Responsibilities
The intern will:
- Develop or refine technical support documentation for geophysics instrumentation and/or software
- Develop or refine teaching materials to support teaching with Earth science data and methods
- Process or reconfigure geophysics data for incorporation into learning activities (ex. electromagnetic, GPR, GPS/GNSS, and others)
- Manipulate data and images in software such as GIS (e.g. ArcGIS), Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator
- Help prepare (and maybe teach) materials for workshops, webinars, or outreach events.
- Attend regular meetings and share progress on assigned tasks.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications
- Current undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate (within 1 year), in Earth sciences, geophysics, or related STEM field.
- Interest in working at the intersection of science and education
- Authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with geophysics methods (e.g., GPS/GNSS, electrical resistivity, GPR, seismic)
- Experience developing education, outreach, or community engagement materials
- Experience making figures in a graphics, GIS, and/or video software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, ArcGIS)
- Experience using data to address scientific questions
Required Skills & Attributes
- Ability to write and communicate effectively and clearly.
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
- Ability to manage time effectively, especially when balancing multiple tasks or priorities.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL WORK DEMANDS
Physical Work Demands:
- Able to sit and/or stand to work at a computer.
- Occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds (in the case of any in-person activities).
Mental & Schedule Demands:
- Regular and on-time attendance at Zoom or other virtual meetings as scheduled.
- Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.
- Able to travel to EarthScope instrument center or workshop site, if needed.
- Comfort working with a remote, distributed team across time zones.
