Position Summary

The Computing and Data Science Academy Intern will support EarthScope's technical courses by developing, improving, and consolidating pre-course modules that prepare participants for successful learning experiences. The intern will focus on building foundational instructional materials that ensure students arrive ready to engage with technical content. This role is ideal for a student interested in the intersection between instructional design and geophysics content knowledge, identifying and addressing prerequisite skill gaps, and creating reusable educational resources for scientific computing education.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will:

  • Develop new pre-course modules addressing foundational skills such as Python basics, command line usage, content and scientific computing prerequisites.
  • Review and consolidate existing pre-course materials from multiple courses to create consistent, reusable modules that can be adapted across EarthScope's technical course portfolio.
  • Test pre-course module content, including Jupyter notebooks and interactive exercises, to ensure they run cleanly in GeoLab and are accessible to learners with varying technical backgrounds.
  • Analyze past student evaluations, instructor feedback, Moodle data, and course retrospectives to identify common prerequisite knowledge gaps and prioritize pre-course module improvements.
  • Develop assessment tools (quizzes, self-checks, readiness diagnostics) that help students gauge their preparedness for technical courses.
  • Create documentation and instructor guides that explain how to customize and deploy pre-course modules for specific course contexts.
  • Test and refine pre-course module sequencing to ensure appropriate scaffolding and clear learning progression.
  • Optionally attend EarthScope technical courses to better understand how pre-course preparation impacts the learner experience.
