PROGRAM & POSITION DESCRIPTION
EarthScope & Program Overview
EarthScope Consortium, operator of the NSF National Geophysical Facility, is a global community of employees, scientists, scholars, and educators. Our goal is to advance understanding of the Earth and its physical systems by democratizing access to geophysical instrumentation, observations, and practices.

The EarthScope Student Career Internship Program offers real-world work experiences for undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates (within 1 year of graduating at time of application) related to the interns’ academic and career goals. Each intern is an integral member of the team and plays an important role by contributing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to specific projects.

Position Overview
- Time Commitment: Full-time
- Internship Dates: Late May to early August 2026, exact dates TBD
- Modality: Remote
- Compensation: Weekly stipend of $1,000/week for 11 weeks
Position Summary
Intern will assist in creating content for outreach-focused science communication to broad audiences, as well as content to highlight EarthScope’s science-support activities to stakeholder communities. Specific projects will be selected based on skillset, interest, and growth goals. Tasks may include contributing to organizational news stories and science summaries, interviewing other interns, creating and posting content on social media, updating and creating webpages, digital or print graphic design, and creating videos. Successful applicants will have basic technical skills working in an online environment, be highly organized, be an enthusiastic learner, and have excellent attention to detail. Support for attending a national science conference following the internship is available.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce writing, graphics, or video for communications purposes.
- Create and edit web content.
- Develop compelling and engaging social media posts.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications
- University-level student or above in Earth sciences or relevant STEM field.
- Interest in working at the intersection of science and communication.
- Authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in WordPress or other web content management system.
- Experience with social media platforms in a professional or organizational context..
- Experience with graphics software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop), video creation, or data visualization tools.
- Experience translating complex scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences.

- Ability to write and communicate effectively and clearly.
- Highly organized.
- Ability to work independently and pay attention to detail.
- Ability to manage time, especially when there may be competing priorities.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL WORK DEMANDS
Physical Work Demands:
- Able to sit and/or stand to work at a computer.
Mental & Schedule Demands:
- Regular and on-time attendance to Zoom meetings and set work schedule.
- Work 40 hours per week.
- Comfort working with a remote, distributed team across time zones.
